Abstract

Colostrum is essential for piglet survival and performance, and its intake during the first hours of life is decisive for passive immunity transfer, thermoregulation, and initial development. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of colostrum intake on daily weight gain and mortality rate until weaning. A total of 1,224 piglets were classified by birth weight (light, medium, heavy) and colostrum intake (<150 g, 150–300 g, >300 g). Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test for weight gain, and Chi-square test for mortality. Piglets with greater colostrum intake showed higher weight gains and lower mortality rates regardless of birth weight category. Adequate colostrum intake is crucial for the zootechnical performance and viability of piglets in maternity units.
